The Jesus Fish, the Greek letter alpha

Ichthys the Jesus Fish, the Greek letter alpha

AGAPAS ME is the question that Jesus asked Simon Peter at the end of the Gospel according to John (well, actually, it’s two of the three similar questions put to Peter). God is love. More specifically God is agape love, that all-giving gift of self. God will always love us, those of us made in the image of God.

But when put us, do we love God? To a certain extent, since all human beings are directed toward the good, having the desire for good, we all do have some love for God (even when we deny Him). However, the first commandment is to love God with all one’s heart, soul and might. That is, do we have a properly ordered love of God?

The rich young man in Matthew 19 asks Jesus, “What good must I do to gain eternal life?” In the exchange, it turns out that we need to follow the commandments as a minimum. But, there is something more. Jesus asks the rich young man to sell all he has and give to the poor and “come, follow me.” The question “Do you love me (with agape love)?” can be taken as a question which answers the rich young man. It is an ethical question in the ancient sense. It is not a call to do the bare minimum, but a call to excellence in love and thereby a call to excellence in character.

The question is one which this blog will struggle to answer.

    Hi Bob,

I like this idea. Necessary to hear reminders that Mary needed to take care of the helpless Jesus. And using the most important mother and son to show that the most fruitful people start from nothing but a zygote.
Are you asking for any thoughts on how to improve it? If so, I would be happy to try and help.

    Fondly,

    Erin
